CRITIQUE GROUPS

  • Bring your laptop and copies of what you plan to work on during the weekend. Industry-standard: 12 pt. Times New Roman / double space / indent first sentence of each paragraph

  • Elevator pitch, which means if you’re sitting next to an agent at dinner and they ask what you’re working on, you have a (very) brief description. A description you’d recite in the time it takes for an elevator to go from the lobby to the fifth floor. No paperwork is needed, just an ability to answer the question succinctly

  • For each group session (meeting twice with two mentors for a total of four times), you’ll need six copies of your material to hand out. Since your first meeting is fifteen minutes after the WELCOME, please bring your copies to the WELCOME

  • Critique groups are made up of no more than five writers helmed by an industry professional. You’ll have approximately five-to-seven minutes to read your material out loud. Your mentor will then open up the discussion, allowing for equal time for all

  • For MG and YA writers, we strongly recommend bringing your first chapter. The first line hooks the reader to your next line, next paragraph…and on we go

  • For MG and YA writers, you may want to provide a synopsis (at most, two sentences) of your story

  • If you are a picture book writer, you may bring more than one

  • You can bring a different selection of pages to each group or rewrite the same piece and bring it back to the group/s

  • On average, you can expect to have at minimum five pages read out loud. You can either rewrite for your next critique session or have new chapters critiqued. Everyone’s experience is different and it’s possible you’ll change your mind once things get rolling, therefore, our recommendation is to bring your laptop

  • If you’re an illustrator, feel free to bring your artwork for our Illustrator Review, and to your critique group

  • We will have a printer available, yet if you have a personal printer, please bring it.
